Stadt- und Kreisarchäologie Osnabrück

Stadt- und Kreisarchäologie Osnabrück
Lotter Straße 6
DE-49078 Osnabrück

The town and district archaeological department was set up in 1975 for the research and protection of archaeological monuments in the district and town of Osnabrück and is thus one of the oldest institutions of its kind in Lower Saxony. Among the most important projects have been the archaeological research on the megalithic culture, burial customs from the Bronze to the Iron Ages, the spread of Celtic culture, Roman-Germanic military conflicts, the early medieval sacred architecture and on settlement landscape and the castles and urban centres of the High Middle Ages.
From the beginning, public relations work has been a focal point of activities. This includes an advisory service for private collectors and institutions, the curating of archaeological collections in museums administered on an honorary basis and the development of information material, sightseeing programmes, exhibitions and publications by the department. In 2004 a communal project realised by the Osnabrück town and district archaeological department and the federation Tourismusverband Osnabrücker Land e.V.  was awarded the ‘Innovationspreis für Tourismus’ in Lower Saxony.
